How expensive will it get?

Bridge Price $105 Million, and Rising

On April 26, Victoria councillors voted to increase the budget for the new Johnson Street Bridge by $8.2 million — $2.4M to pay off claims filed by the contractor and engineering firms against the City of Victoria, $3.8M in new costs, and $2M in extra contingency. The bridge will open to traffic in December 2017, some two years late. Read the staff report here, and the Times Colonist’s report of the councillors’ decision here.

That likely isn’t the end of the increases, or delays. Millions more still need to be allocated for fendering and landscaping, and current construction schedules show many items “on hold”. The project’s engineer of record also gave a presentation on April 26 about the trouble-plagued fabrication of the movable span, and identified several “ongoing” welding problems … but assured the City that inspectors were catching all the issues, and that the fabricator was improving the quality of its work. Read his report here, or watch his presentation here (click on item #5 under the video).

About johnsonstreetbridge.org

Created by Mat Wright, Ross Crockford, and Yule Heibel, this website about Victoria’s Johnson Street Bridge exists to provide a platform for independent information – and further discussion with you.

Although we hold a variety of views on what should happen with the bridge, the three of us came together because of shared convictions:

  • that the City of Victoria’s political process to replace the bridge is seriously flawed;
  • that there are alternatives to this process;
  • that Victorians deserve much more of a say about the process for a project of this scope.

The current estimate for replacing the Johnson Street Bridge is $63 million $77 million $92.8 million $96.8 million. But numbers are only the beginning.

There is much more at stake. We hope that you will explore this site, to learn how you can inform yourself and make your voice heard.
