In the early autumn of 2009 johnsonstreetbridge.ORG submitted a Freedom of Information request to the City of Victoria asking for all the correspondence between Delcan and the CoV up to July 2009. After some negotiation the City agreed the information was in the public interest, and provided a large box of paperwork – documents, emails, and notes – in November, just before the counter-petition process started.  We can wonder – what is going on at City Hall with the Blue Bridge process? As we approach the one year anniversary since council received the Delcan Johnson Street Bridge Assessment report, what lessons have been learned? [...]  John Luton says the engineering department told him it was 4000. The engineering department is now saying it’s 3000. My rough survey suggests it is probably only half of that in good weather in mid-February. Counting cyclists is easy. If City councillors are confused or poorly informed about this number, is there any reason to trust they’ve got the more critical numbers right? Numbers like the probability of a structurally damaging earthquake occurring in the next 50 years, or the cost to fix the bridge, or the cost to build a new, bicycle-friendly bridge. [...] The Johnson Street Bridge petition campaign is over – the oversight and engagement continues. What are the next steps for council and the City of Victoria? Will they seek independent expertise for costs on bridge refurbishment? What is the date for a referendum, and…what is the question to be put to voters? [...] In a Christmas Eve email Geoff Young responded to the many letters he has received over the City of Victoria’s comparison of Johnson Street Bridge repair vs replacement numbers. The document “Johnson Street Bridge: By the Numbers” was published by the City of Victoria just prior to the December 10th Council meeting – Article and Videos – during which Councillor Young introduced a motion to seek independent consultation on the current plans to replace the bridge.
