………………………….
Non- residents of the City of Victoria, who own property within the city boundaries, can still sign the Bridge Petition.
If you live in another British Columbia municipality (Saanich, Oak Bay, Vancouver, Kelowna, etc.) but own property in Victoria, you may still be able to sign the petition as a “non-resident property elector.”
The rules are in section 51 of the Local Government Act, linked here.
To qualify, you must own the Victoria property AS A PERSON, or jointly with other people. You cannot own the property through a corporation.
If you own the property by yourself, you can sign the petition. Download the Petition Form and Information Sheet
If you own the property jointly with other people, only one of you can sign – and that person can only do so with the written consent of the majority of the other owners. (For example, if you co-own the property with your spouse, he or she will have to provide a letter giving his/her consent. An example of such a letter is here.)
Please write the address of the Victoria property you own on the SECOND line of the petition form, and write your residential address on the THIRD line, including your municipality and province, so the City of Victoria can verify that you are eligible. (If you live outside BC, you are not eligible.) Attach a consent letter signed by the majority of other owners, if there are any. Then mail everything to:
JOHNSONSTREETBRIDGE.ORG
PO BOX 5324

If you are still unclear about whether you qualify as a non-resident property elector, please contact the City of Victoria’s Legislative Services department (250-361-0549) or its Property Tax department (250-361-0228).
