Johnson Street Bridge Victoria BC

This website is one step on an awareness campaign. We are a growing group of concerned Victoria and CRD residents who feel Victoria's Johnson Street Bridge or "Blue Bridge" is an issue of vital importance for the city and region. The goal is to provide a central information platform - information from City Hall, media, articles, blogs and opinions so everyone can make an informed decision.

Portland Bridge

This weekend, johnsonstreetbridge.org will be hosting an event with two bridge experts from Portland, who are here to speak about the importance of heritage bridges to their city, and make the case for repairing Victoria’s 85-year-old Johnson Street Bridge.

Ed Wortman is a senior engineer who has overseen the rehabilitation and seismic evaluation of several of Portland’s movable bridges, including its 99-year-old Hawthorne Bridge. Sharon Wood Wortman is the author of three editions of The Portland Bridge Book, and one of the organizers of next summer’s Portland Bridge Festival (http://www.pdxbridgefestival.org).

Sharon will present her popular “Bridge Stories” slide show, illustrating the value of heritage bridges around the world. A question-and-answer session with Ed and Sharon will follow the presentation. Admission by donation. We will also have petition forms available for everyone who’s helping gather signatures.

Invitations to this event, or to meet privately with the Wortmans, have also been extended to Victoria mayor Dean Fortin and all Victoria city councillors.

Tomorrow (Friday, November 27), the Wortmans will also be interviewed on CBC Radio’s “On The Island” program at 8:10 am, and on CFAX 1070, from 10:00 to 10:30 am. Please tune in and call with your comments and questions!
