Johnson Street Bridge Victoria BC

This website is one step on an awareness campaign. We are a growing group of concerned Victoria and CRD residents who feel Victoria's Johnson Street Bridge or "Blue Bridge" is an issue of vital importance for the city and region.The goal is to provide a central information platform - information from City Hall, media, articles, blogs and opinions so everyone can make an informed decision.

We welcome your comments and feedback

Just a quick post to say THANK-YOU to the many supporters who answered our invitation (posted to our e-subscribers) to attend last Sunday’s special information party at the Fernwood Inn (and a big thanks also to our hosts at the Inn)!

Ross Crockford, Mat Wright, and Anne Russo delivered brilliant and informative speeches, the crowd responded generously: your warmth, enthusiasm, and creativity will keep us running with fresh ideas and renewed energy to move democracy forward in Victoria!

We learned from you that citizens are truly fired up about this issue. Voters are genuinely outraged by how the City of Victoria has instigated the process of replacing a heritage landmark – and proposed spending as-yet un-tallied millions of dollars of our money. This issue is now huge – it has moved well past questions around whether or not to destroy the heritage bridge: it’s about democracy …and whether or not it’s working in our city.

Do you want a say? Please continue to get informed. Read Citizens petition for a referendum on the fate of the Blue Bridge (3-page PDF) in the current (December 2009) issue of FOCUS Magazine (available at many locations throughout Greater Victoria).

Then go to this page on our website to get the information you need to

  1. access a petition form;
  2. fill it out correctly;
  3. get it back to us.

Ask us questions. If we can answer, we will. We’ll continue to host public events where you can get informed. We’re here to help you – just as all of you are helping one another to keep democratic citizen engagement alive in our city.

So, please don’t forget to Subscribe to our Mailing list (find the link on the right-hand sidebar, about 1/3 down the page). Just enter your email address, hit “subscribe” and we’ll keep you up-to-date – it’s that easy! (And we take privacy very seriously, which means we absolutely never share your email information with any third party.)

Once again, thank-you to all of our supporters and a special thanks to those who came out on Sunday:

you rawk!

  • Thanks to Yule Heibel, Mat Wright and Ross Crockford for all the great work they are doing for democracy, the public interest and the endangered Johnson Street Bridge here at this website!

    I understand from reading Sam Williams’ in the current number of FOCUS that Anne Russo has joined your campaign and that you will be opening a storefront office soon… That is great news, and I can’t wait to read about it…

    FOCUS Editor Leslie Campbell also has an excellent Editor’s Letter on the apparently waning ethos of conservation at Victoria City Council, which seems to be so foreign to these ‘greens’ like Councillors Chandler, Lucas and Luton…

    Thanks also to my dear wife Dawn Elizabeth Keough Hartnell who signed the Elector Response Form today. We will be sending her form to you by Poste Canada.

    I spoke to my sister Maria Teresa Hartnell Cabrera on the phone in Mexico today. She owns property on Shotbolt, and is in favour of the referendum for the Johnson Street Bridge also.

    I suggested to her that she might want to correspond with the City of Victoria through email, voicing her opposition to the demolition of the Johnson Street Bridge, and the higher taxes that will come with the philistinism.

    But I also just sent her a link to the pdf of the Elector Response Form, hoping that once she signs it, it will get through the capricious Mexican postal service, by the grace of Dios…

    Tomorrow I will try to get my brother and sister…

  • My brother John Hartnell, and sister Roxanna Hartnell have signed!

    Heading down to Cook Street Village this afternoon just after 3:00 p.m.

    Look for me or other volunteers with the blue vest that says: SIGN THE PETITION!

    Hope to meet old friends and meet new ones there who believe in democracy in Victoria…
